Changing the Sparkplugs on the 2005 WRX STi
Monday, January 5th, 2009On Sunday I finally got around to changing the spark plugs on my STi. The manual calls for a change at 60,000 miles and I’m at 72,000 so I was a bit concerned. When I first got the car I had done some reading that indicated that changing the plugs was a challenge so I did a bit more reading before digging in. I found a great article that outlined the whole process at the clubwrx.net forums here. The only thing that was different was that I didn’t need to remove the battery to access the plugs on the driver’s side. While removing the battery and battery tray might make access to the front plug a bit easier, it wasn’t necessary to remove it.
The thing about the project that was surprising was that the plugs that I removed were as good as new. No wear, no change in the spark gap, and the color was absolutely perfect. I really don’t think that I had to do the change. The whole thing took about 1.5 hours from start to finish. If you have a 10mm, 12mm, and 5/8″ spark plug socket, you should go ahead and give this project a go.
