Twitter tips

I’ve been getting into twitter a bit more lately. You can follow me on twitter a http://twitter.com/omni .

Some people don’t get twitter. Common Craft posted a really great layman’s explaination of the over-arching ideas behind Twitter for those who are trying to understand it.

Twitter is very useful, but can be confusing to use at first, particularly in regards to how the replying system works. What replies do you get, which ones are filtered out, how do you direct message people? There was a tweet from Steve Gillmor today about how the whole reply and follow thing works on twitter so I thought I’d post it here to help people get their heads around it.

Another really useful feature of Twitter is to track words.  If you track a word, you are telling Twitter to send you any tweet that contains the keyword you specify.  For example, in Twitter type “Track education” and any tweet that contains the word education will be forwarded to you via Twitter.  If you are trying to track down people with common interests or expertise on an area you are researching, this can be a very useful feature.
