Day 2 started in Sioux Falls where Kent and I decided to day off the interstate and take SD 44 and US 18. Across the state. The big takeaway from the day was how well off we are. The absolute poverty on the Indian reservations we passed through left us truly thankful for all we have.
The scenery was nice in spots with many sunflower fields. I had no idea SD grew sunflowers.
The lowlight of the day was a several mile long stretch of US 18 that was missing. No detour, no alternate route, just torn up pavement and dirt where it used to be. Thankfully it wasn’t raining or the clay and dirt would have turned the road into an ice rink.
We ended up the day at Mt. Rushmore, which was significantly upgraded since I visited as a kid. We stayed the nite in Keystone.
