MacBook Repair Frustration

Last Monday I sent my MacBook Core2Duo in for repair.  The trackpad button stopped working.  Luckily, I had a MacBook Pro to transfer to while the Macbook was in the shop.  I got a call from Apple on Saturday afternoon stating that they would not proceed with the repair because a 3rd party 250gb hard drive had been installed and, according to them, has gone bad.  1.  It was fine when I sent it to them.  I had just upgraded it to Leopard without a hitch.  2.  What in the name of all that is good does a bad hard drive have to do with a bad trackpad button.  Why does one need to be working to repair or replace the other?  3.  Why does it cost $709 for Apple to replace said hard drive for me if I chose to have them do the repair?

Smacks of corporate stupidity.  I’ve been dealing with Applecare for ten years and I’ve never had to deal with such nonsense before.
