First ride of the year

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

Got the bike out for the first ride of 2010. Tim and I did about 175 miles through northern Illinois including lunch at a 50′s diner in Henry. The VTX ran great, the new leathers performed as expected, and the new saddlebags performed great, toting all my stuff along for the ride.

Disney day 1 start

Saturday, July 4th, 2009

Had a long day yesterday traveling from Panama City to Orlando. Took 2.5 hrs to check in after a series of resort screw-ups. So much for stress free resort vacationing. Ended the day with a 2 hr swim in the resort pool and the kids went to sleep about 11:15 PM.

This morning the meal passes worked great and we all started out refreshed before wevdeparted for Magic Kingdom at 10 AM. It’s 11:30 now and we have 1 show down. Waiting in line for Astro Orbiter now, then driving cars an Carousel of Progress.

We are looking forward to fireworks on mainstreet tonight.

San Francisco – 1st visit

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

Started my first visit to San Francisco last night. I’ve been to Santa Clara via the Oakland Airport before, but never in SF proper. So far I’m unimpressed. Tim and I got in late, about 11:30 or so to the airport and back to the hotel around midnight local time. We hadn’t eaten since lunch so we went out looking for some food. Now I realize it was midnight, but our hotel is right off of Market and 8th Streets. I would expect something to be open… 4 blocks one direction and all we found was someplace that sold cold sandwiches. Not what I had in mind. The other direction… a Carl’s Jr. with some less than hospitable co-diners. It was really the late night crowd. So a Jalapeno burger it was at 12:30 A.M. Local time (2:30 AM to me).

How can a big city like San Francisco not have a decent late night eatery on one of it’s main streets for a 7 or 8 block range is beyond me. Left coasters… go figure.

iTunes Management App for iPhone

Monday, April 28th, 2008

The Wired blog put out a rumor this weekend that Apple is developing an app for the iPhone that could be used to remote-control a computer’s iTunes playback. I’d love to regain this ability. Previously I’ve used Salling Clicker to do this from both Palm OS and WM5 and 6 devices while on my deck during the summer. The convenience and portability of a solution like this is great. I hope this is more than a rumor and comes to fruition in the iPhone 2.0 firmware.

Blogo

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Just read about this new blogging app Blogo over at NewsGang.net and thought I’d give it a try. I used to be a big Ecto user, then fire, then ScribeFire, then Flock. Some are better than others for certain things, but lately I’ve just been using the web interface from WordPress to do my entries. The interface on Blogo is interesting… Very minimal. Has a built in photo editor, and a whole different screen to edit existing posts instead of reusing the same content creation screen. I’ll try it for the 21 day trial and see how it goes.

A couple more Leopard annoyances

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I have run into a couple more Leopard annoyances this week as I’ve used it.  The first revolves around printing.  When a job prints, the job monitor for the used printer launches and shows in the dock.  In previous versions of the OS, once the job is finished spooling, the monitor closes and the dock icon disappears.  In Leopard, this is not the case.  The monitor remains open until manually closed.

The second item is with Spaces.  When switching spaces via Command+Tabbing to another applicaion, which resides in another space, the frontmost window of the new application does not receive focus.  Instead the application receives focus, but none of its windows are active.  A word document, therefore, must be clicked on before any editing, read pasting, can be done.  It is a very annoying problem.

Notable Links related to the NYT Liverpool Article

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

I thought I’d do another thread that has some thoughtful comments about the NYT article about the Liverpool 1:1 Failure.  The master list can be found at the technorati link http://technorati.com/search/www.nytimes.com/2007/05/04/education/04laptop.html?authority=n&language=n&start=0

More Bedroom Furniture

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

Got the headboard installed on the new waterbed on Sunday. I moved it into the room before the poly was 100% dry, but it was 10 below zero sunday night and I really needed to reclaim the garage for the cars to make sure I could get to work on Monday. I’m real happy with the design. The drawers and the lower middle section between the drawers slide over/under each other to give access to the 10″ of storage below that level and the upper shelf is a great spot for the indirect lamps we bought. We aren’t sold on the location for the iHome clock yet, it may get moved down to the next level at some point.

The next pieces are two dressers, one for each side of the bed but I’m taking the coming weekend off from building furniture. What I should do is spend some time in front of the graph paper notebook and get some firm plans for the dressers hammered out. The right side of the bed is about 48″ while the space between the bed and wall on the left is only about 24″. I’m trying to decide if I should make identical units, one for each side or if I should use more of the space on the wide side and make a bigger unit. What do you think?
